Ice on the Tasman Glacier Terminal Lake

Ice on Tasman Lake

Icebergs float on the Tasman Lake amongst the brown waters waiting their turn at melting slowly and racing off down the river draining the lake. It's fun to sit and watch the lake and the icebergs, some small and some slightly larger, move past you as they head for the exit. There is quite a current near the outlet, and I tried (successfully I might add) to not fall in as I pottered around the moraine leaning out from the shore with camera and tripod in hand to explore the options for this photograph. It might have been dicey had I taken the plunge so close to the river and those nasty rapids - at the very least I'd have ruined a decent camera, lens, and quite possibly ruined myself in the process.

If you go to the South Island of New Zealand, you really must head to the Tasman Glacier lake. Just be careful!

This image will be part of a small fine-art book project code-named Three weeks in the South Island. That's not likely to be the title, but you'll get the idea of what the book is going to be from it.

I'll keep posting more updates to the blog as the book takes shape...
