Fun on the 163

July 14, 2009

So last night my wife and I were minding our own business driving down the 163 to Tiffany's in Fashion Valley, San Diego, when I noticed the car in front squirm slightly just as I caught a glimpse of something dark in front of it and then a puff of smoke. In a flash a large tire (sorry for all you Kiwi folks - it's not a "tyre", but a "tire" here in the USA) shot out - vertically oriented - and heading straight for us.

In the split second after the tire popped into view I knew there wasn't time to dive left or right into other lanes either side and cause a huge pile up so it was brace for impact time. Surprisingly little impact though I felt the tire roll underneath the car after it had smacked the front bumper. Upon later inspection in the parking garage at the mall it appeared to have left nothing but rubber marks on my nice clean white bumper. Oh, it also did a good job of removing the front license plate and leaving it, along with the black plastic surround, somewhere on the 163. Oh well. It was quite exciting though.

We had a lovely evening all the same, got our rings cleaned, and drove home. Now I also have to clean the car.
